Vehicles being WRITTEN OFF by insurance companies
Anyone got any experience of this?
Do they normally try to take the piss re valuing it?

Re: Vehicles being WRITTEN OFF by insurance companies
insurance company tried to write off a car i had an accident in once when i was younger, car was worth about 20k at the time, they said that the accident had bent the chassis and then offered me about 12k for it as a write off. i had to get lawyers involved and repossess the car from them. had it inspected by an independent garage who confirmed there was no chassis damage at all. the insurane company's garage was trying to pull a fast one so they could get the car and turn a good profit. had to get the ombudsman involved and insurance company eventually admitted that they were giving me the price for the previous model too. thieving cunts.

Ex Mrs QFB had car written off - had owned it 2.5 yrs.

We'd bought it used privately at 'book price'.

Insurance company offered slightly above the price we'd paid. I found a couple of examples of similar cars, at a higher price, for sale on Autotrader.

The engineer who had made the offer, up it to meet the Autotrader ad price.

Got £400 more than we'd paid for it 2.5 years ago. It was a 1.2 VW Polo 7 years old.

Insurance company uses Glass's and Parkers for valuation and knock some off to line their own pockets. If you can prove similar age, condition & mileage is worth more they'll go to the higher guide valuations.

If you want to take it further the ombudsman will use the guides too.

Unless you have an agreed valuation when takng the policy they all use the guides. The valuation you give when taking out the policy is probably not an agreed valuation, it is just an excuse to rip you off in the event of a claim and charge you more for the policy.

I spent 2 and a half years arguing my valuation and "won". Ombudsman sided in my favour, I got an extra £300 but not the extra £2000 it would cost to replace car with similar age, condition & mileage. Ombudsman agreed with me off the record but his hands were tied and could only use the guides despite all my independant evidence of the true worth.

I wrote my Audi s4 off before getting fully off the driveway once.

But yes, insurance companies will rip the shit out of any valuation you think the car is worth, so hang on in there for all you're worth before agreeing to any setllement.

Most firms will require an up to date MOT and Engineer's report before offering insurance on a write off.

Re: Vehicles being WRITTEN OFF by insurance companies
Depends on the category its written off as. Cat A / B won't be back on the road. Cat C can be but sometimes requires a VIC check. Cat D is fine.

Re: Vehicles being WRITTEN OFF by insurance companies
If it was only insured for £2k then that's all they will offer you. You should try the 'never accept the first offer' route, but don't hold out much hope for getting much more. At least you should be able to buy it back for a lot less than the £2k insured value and then get it repaired for a lot less than you've been quoted. It doesn't matter about it being declared a write-off if you are going to keep it for the long term and aren't bothered about the future value of it, but I don't know what route you take with the DVLA if its declared a write-off.

So if it gets written off,you just need an MOT to make it road legal again?

Re: Vehicles being WRITTEN OFF by insurance companies
This happened to me a couple of months ago, even though the car was still perfectly driveable.

I was offered £1650 for the total loss, but knew I'd need at least £2500 to get something as good.

I was also offered £1550 if I wanted to keep the car and get it repaired myself. Knowing tha,t whatever happened, it was worth more than the £100 to have a go I kept it, had it re-MOT'd and am now happily driving around in a beaten up, dented car and £1500 richer.

I win.

So yes, they will give you a shit valuation and will somehow try and make money out of you.

Re: Vehicles being WRITTEN OFF by insurance companies
Parked my horsebox at the bottom of a hill last week. Some bloke parked his car at the top without engaging the handbrake properly, rolled down and smashed the whole front of my horsebox up.

Just got a repair estimate.

£4250+ vat.

FMOB.

I reckon it's worth about £4500, but it's only insured at £2000 cos that's what I paid for it, but it was just a horsebox then, it's now a kitted out motor home with solar panels, furniture etc.

Re: Vehicles being WRITTEN OFF by insurance companies
Leonard just did this in the US and was treated well by the insurance company with a valuation on a leased vehicle that actually gave me some equity back
